Understanding the Triune God
One God in Three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the most important truths of the Christian faith. Although the word Trinity does not appear directly in the Bible, the truth of the Trinity is clearly revealed throughout Scripture.
Christians believe in one God, not three gods. Yet this one true God eternally exists as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Spirit is God.
Yet the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father.
This is the mystery and glory of the Triune God.
The Bible Teaches That God Is One
The Bible clearly teaches that there is only one true God.
Deuteronomy 6:4 says:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
Christianity is not polytheism. Christians do not worship three separate gods. We worship one God.
Isaiah 45:5 says:
“I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from Me there is no God.”
The foundation of the Christian faith is monotheism: there is one eternal, holy, living God.
The Bible Also Reveals Three Divine Persons
Although God is one, Scripture also reveals the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as divine.
1. The Father Is God
The Bible often speaks of God the Father as Creator, Lord, and the One who sends the Son into the world.
Jesus taught His disciples to pray:
“Our Father in heaven…”
— Matthew 6:9
The Father is the source of love, grace, authority, and divine purpose. He sends the Son for our salvation and gives the Holy Spirit to dwell within believers.
2. The Son Is God
Jesus Christ is not merely a prophet, teacher, or moral example. He is the eternal Son of God.
John 1:1 says:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
John 1:14 then says:
“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
This means Jesus Christ is the eternal Word who became human.
Jesus forgave sins, received worship, claimed unity with the Father, conquered death, and revealed God fully to humanity.
Colossians 1:15 says Christ is:
“The image of the invisible God.”
To know Jesus is to know God.
3. The Holy Spirit Is God
The Holy Spirit is not merely power, energy, or influence. He is a divine Person.
The Holy Spirit speaks, teaches, guides, convicts, comforts, empowers, and can be grieved.
Acts 5 shows that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. This reveals the deity of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit gives new birth, sanctifies believers, produces spiritual fruit, and leads the church into truth.
The Trinity Revealed at Jesus’ Baptism
One of the clearest biblical pictures of the Trinity appears at the baptism of Jesus.
Matthew 3:16–17 describes Jesus being baptized, the Spirit descending like a dove, and the voice of the Father speaking from heaven:
“This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”
Here we see:
the Son being baptized,
the Spirit descending,
the Father speaking.
This does not mean three gods. It reveals the one God existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Great Commission and the Triune Name
In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands His disciples:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Notice Jesus says “name,” not “names.”
There is one divine name, yet three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
This became one of the strongest biblical foundations for the Christian understanding of the Trinity.
The Trinity in Salvation
The work of salvation is deeply Trinitarian.
The Father plans salvation.
The Son accomplishes salvation through His death and resurrection.
The Holy Spirit applies salvation to believers’ hearts.
Ephesians 1 shows this beautifully:
The Father chooses and blesses.
The Son redeems through His blood.
The Holy Spirit seals believers as God’s possession.
Salvation is not the work of one Person alone, but the unified work of the Triune God.
How Does Each Person of the Trinity Help Us Know God?
The Father Reveals God’s Love and Purpose
The Father shows us that God is not distant or cold. He is loving, holy, wise, and sovereign.
Through the Father, we know that we are created, loved, called, and adopted as God’s children.
The Son Reveals God’s Grace and Redemption
Jesus Christ makes God visible.
Through His incarnation, cross, resurrection, and teaching, we see God’s love, holiness, mercy, truth, and saving power.
Jesus is the way to the Father.
The Holy Spirit Reveals God’s Presence and Power
The Holy Spirit brings God’s presence into the believer’s life.
He comforts, teaches, sanctifies, empowers, and leads us into deeper relationship with Christ.
Without the Holy Spirit, Christianity becomes merely external religion. Through the Spirit, the life of Christ is formed within us.
Common Misunderstandings About the Trinity
Some people wrongly think the Trinity means God has three parts. But God is not divided into parts.
Some think the Father became the Son and then became the Spirit. But Scripture shows the Father, Son, and Spirit are distinct Persons.
Some think Jesus is less than the Father. But Scripture teaches that the Son is fully divine.
The Trinity is not easy to fully comprehend because God is greater than human understanding. Yet it is not irrational. It is a mystery revealed by Scripture.
Why Does the Trinity Matter?
The Trinity is not only a doctrine for theologians. It shapes the entire Christian life.
Because God is Triune, love existed eternally within God before creation.
Because God is Triune, salvation is relational.
Because God is Triune, prayer is communion with the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit.
Because God is Triune, worship is directed to one God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Spiritual Reflection
The Trinity teaches us humility. We cannot fully master God with human logic. We receive His revelation with faith, worship, and reverence.
The Trinity teaches us relationship. God Himself is not lonely or isolated. Within the life of God there is eternal love, communion, and unity.
The Trinity teaches us worship. We worship the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Trinity teaches us dependence. We need the Father’s love, the Son’s redemption, and the Spirit’s transforming power every day.
Conclusion
The word Trinity may not appear in the Bible, but the truth of the Trinity is clearly revealed in Scripture.
There is one God.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Spirit is God.
The Father is not the Son.
The Son is not the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not the Father.
Yet these three Persons are one true and eternal God.
This is the Christian faith: one God in three Persons.
To know the Triune God is to know the Father’s love, the Son’s saving grace, and the Holy Spirit’s living presence.
